Large shears can be great for making longer, sweeping cuts that require more control and power to get through a full head of hair. But keep in mind that they may not be suitable for shorter styles or intricate detailing due to the size.

Many larger shear types come with a beveled edge, which can be great for making even and smooth scissor-over-comb work. And they’re often ideal for bulk cutting, so if that’s a service you offer in your salon then these should definitely make it onto your list of must-have tools.

Considerations When Selecting Hair Shear Length

• Common client needs: Likely the single largest factor to consider is what kinds of cuts and services you’re doing most often in your salon. If the majority of your work involves shorter cuts, then small or regular shear lengths may be the best option for you. But if you specialize more in long men’s styles or a lot of bulk-cutting services, a larger size may be more suitable. And if you’re a versatile stylist who covers all these types, you may need multiple shear options within the same style.

• Hand and wrist preferences: It’s important to consider what feels better in your hand and wrist when you’re deciding between shear lengths. Look for comfortable thumb positions, balanced weight distribution, and adjustable tension settings that will keep you from experiencing any sort of pain or strain during cutting services.

• Blade type: Different blade types can be beneficial in different scenarios – beveled edges are great for scissor-over-comb work, while flat edges are ideal for cutting through bulk and thicker locks.
